Living with Braces
Some Easy Tips to Help You Adjust
Although the initial period (usually 1 to 2 weeks) of having braces can be uncomfortable, most patients adjust to having braces and find that overall, their orthodontic journey is quite smooth and tolerable.
Here are some tips to ensure that you are ready for your orthodontic journey:
-
Have braces-friendly food ready.
At Capital Smiles, we will advise you of the foods that you should avoid when having braces. These include hard and chewy foods such as nuts, muesli bars and popcorn (to name a few). It is best to avoid such foods as they can cause your braces to break, which can result in discomfort and necessitate an emergency trip to come and see us.
-
Use the orthodontic care kit that we give you.
After you have had your braces placed, you will be given an orthodontic care kit. Inside this kit, you will find some tooth brushes and oral care items that will help you to clean thoroughly around your braces.
You will also find orthodontic wax inside your care kit. Stick this wax onto your braces so that the braces do not rub against the insides of your mouth. This will be very helpful when you have just had your braces placed and are still getting used to them.
-
Maintain good oral hygiene throughout your orthodontic treatment.
By doing this you will ensure that you do not get white or brown marks and patches on your teeth when your braces come off. These marks or patches (called decalcification) can occur when hygiene is not as good as it should be when braces are on.
If you have an orthodontic emergency, do not hesitate to call us and we will see you as soon as possible to get you out of discomfort.
